Glenn School part of Ohio State, Ohio University partnership to address climate change policies and their impact on Ohio

The John Glenn School of Public Affairs at The Ohio State University will provide expert evaluation on climate policies that will affect the state of Ohio as part of a $500,000 project awarded to The Ohio State University and Ohio University. The project will help Ohio develop a climate change plan in anticipation of federal climate change policies.

Dr. Andrew Keeler, a professor at the Glenn School who does research in the field of environmental and natural resources economics and policy, will take the lead in evaluating existing and proposed state and regional climate change policies. His team will then make recommendations for an Ohio climate change plan based on their findings.

As the sixth highest energy-consuming state in the nation, Ohio depends on energy to fuel its economy. As a result of this energy-intensive economy, Ohio is the fourth-ranked carbon dioxide-emitting state in the nation and is at increasing risk not complying with federal air quality standards.

Questions facing Ohio’s policy makers include: What federal actions will be taken in the near future? What impact will these regulations have on Ohio’s economy? What actions can be taken now to minimize these impacts? What policies should the state follow to address the risks of climate change and be successful in a carbon-constrained world?

Funding for the project came from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act State Energy Program.
